Visit from Grandma, Papa, and Toni

As the school year was winding down, we got a special visit from Grandma and Papa, who came to stay with us for a few days.  Now, you may be surprised to know that sometimes when grandparents come to visit, they bring with them a few presents for their grandchildren :)  And the very best present of all?

It was such a happy reunion for these sweet cousins!  Toni had just graduated 8th grade, and we were all so excited she could join Grandma and Papa for this trip.

Toni wasn't the only present, however.  Papa couldn't wait to share a couple of very special gifts with Liam and Joergen: their very own fully-loaded tool boxes.

Grandma and Papa, for the win!  Those tools went to good use quickly, as we had some work to do to repair some winter damage to the deck:

Liam had just a few days of kindergarten left but was excited to have new walking buddies to and from school that week.

He was especially excited to have them here for the annual Candlebrook Carnival to celebrate the end of the school year.  We had so much fun!
Uh oh, Toni... back away slowly, before it makes eye contact!

In line for the obstacle course.  Love these two together!

Head to head at the obstacle course... can you guess who won?
Our time together was full of fun, silliness, and great memories.  Some of my favorites:

Toni and J rocking their Silly Putty mustaches at the grocery store :)

Playing in the pool in the backyard... this was taken seconds before Joergen got me right in the forehead with that stream of water!!  It was so fun to hear all their laughter that afternoon!
As a gift to Toni for her 8th grade graduation, and as a Mother's Day present to me, Daddy got us all tickets to go see The Lion King at the Academy of Music in Philadelphia!  That was the first Broadway show that he and I saw together 10 years ago, and I loved sharing it with three of my favorites in the next generation!

Ready for the show to begin!
The show was amazing and we all had a blast!  I knew it was a win when immediately after the show ended, Joergen exclaimed, "I want to watch it again! Right NOW!"

On their last night here, we hosted a family game night at home.

Playing "Camp"-- where I spent most of my time at the camp!  I do not have good luck with that game!

Good job, Daddy!  A true artiste!

Love these three!

Thank you Papa and Grandma for a wonderful visit!

Memorial Weekend in Alexandria

We were SO excited and ready for summer to finally arrive, so we decided to be all patriotic and festive by spending Memorial Day weekend with Nana and Grandpa in Alexandria, VA.  It had been 5 years to the date since we had last been in Alexandria.  This would be Joergen's first trip, and Liam's first that he would be able to actually remember.

The highlight of the weekend was most definitely going back to Wolf Trap to see a live taping of A Prairie Home Companion.  I grew up listening to the show with my parents, so to be able to now introduce Liam and Joergen to the man in the red shoes - and have them love it! - was just the best. And really, what better way to enjoy the show than to be outside in warm weather with a picnic dinner and a glass of wine?!

Three generations waiting for the show to begin

I spy with my little eye...

Garrison Keillor!  Do you?

Silliness!

One of my favorite things about the show on Memorial weekend is how they always end it with a patriotic sing-along.  It may sound hokey, but it really is awesome.

After a great show, we spent the following day down in DC exploring the Air and Space Museum. It was a little hotter out and the lines were long, but it was definitely worth it!

Look, Grandma! This one's from Chicago!

Playing "spotlight tag" in the atrium with Dad.  Don't get caught!
As we were heading back to the train station after our museum visit, we couldn't resist a stop on the carousel by the National Mall.

And then it was back to Alexandria we go :)

Thanks for a very fun weekend, Nana and Grandpa!!

Bennett's Baptism

We were really excited to witness little Bennett's baptism and celebrate his first sacrament with the Avellino family at Blessed Teresa of Calcutta in Schwenksville.  Bennett is the sweetest, happiest baby, and Liam and Joergen just adore their little buddy!

A Little Scare

While at Joergen's 4-year check-up a couple of months ago, I asked Dr. Niami about a little round lump that had been on Joergen's bottom for as long as I could remember.  It had never bothered him, so I never really thought to say anything before - and I have no idea what made me think of it this time around.  Dr. Niami took a look and said that it was probably nothing, but anytime he sees lumps or bumps under the skin like that, he prefers to have it get checked out by a specialist.  So he referred us to Dr. Mattei, a general surgeon at CHOP, for some testing.

I wasn't really worried about any of this, until one day I pressed on the lump while getting Joergen changed, and he jumped in pain.  Immediately, my momma-bear worry jumped with him.  I called Dr. Mattei's office and moved up his appointment to as soon as possible, and within a few days, we were on our way into the city bright and early in the morning to get this thing checked out.

As soon as we arrived, I understood why CHOP has the excellent reputation that it does.  Everything just felt so kid- and family-centered and was really very calming.  Joergen thought it was pretty cool that he got to wear a bracelet with his name on it, and was happy and content watching Scooby Doo with a granola bar while he waited to see the doctor.

Within minutes of meeting Dr. Mattei, I knew Joergen was in the best possible hands. He was awesome with him and very straightforward yet collaborative with me.  He examined Joergen and decided we should try to get a look at the lump with an ultrasound.  So off we went down the hall to do just that.

Joergen was such a champ through his ultrasound... getting goo spread all over your bum while you're poked and prodded by a couple of techs is not exactly a picnic!  I couldn't have been prouder of his patience and willingness to go with the flow.

We got to go back to Dr. Mattei right after his ultrasound to discuss his results, but interestingly enough, there was not much to discuss.  The ultrasound showed... nothing!  It was so strange to have something that was so visible and palpable on the outside not even exist on an ultrasound.  Dr. Mattei discussed all of our possible next steps.  I wasn't comfortable with doing nothing, and surgery seemed so, well, extreme.  We agreed that trying to get more information was our best route, which meant scheduling Joer for an MRI.  And fortunately, CHOP has a King of Prussia office that does MRIs, so we could get this done much closer to home.

Because of Joergen's age, he would have to be fully sedated for his MRI.  I don't think I really understood how involved that process was, and that was probably for the better!  After a pretty extensive intake examination, the anesthesiologist walked me through the process.  We would let Joergen play with some toys, and they would give him what they called "giggle juice".  This would take the edge off and allow them to sedate him via an IV without him minding quite so much.  Once he went "under" they would take him in for his MRI, which would take about an hour, and he would wake up within an hour or so after that.

Now, "giggle juice" sure sounds fun, but I'm pretty sure it's disgusting.  As soon as he drank it, he started scraping his tongue with his hands to get the taste out of his mouth!  He was definitely not feeling giggly after that. Within about 10 minutes though, I could tell that the juice was starting to kick in.  It is a very, very strange experience watching your 4-year-old under the influence!!  I had to laugh when Joergen slurred, "Mommm, let'ssss plaaaay 'Iiii Spyyyy'.  I'llllll go firrrrst."
(Pause. Looks around the room.  Smiles.)
"Now it'ssss yyyyyourrrr turrrrrn."

Once his IV was in and he faded off into sleep, I gave him a little kiss and they wheeled him away.  Before they left, though, the anesthesiologist took one look at me and said, "There's one thing I forgot to tell you... it's okay to cry.  Most people do."

Thank you sir-- don't mind if I do.

Even though this was truly not a big deal in the grand scheme of things, I couldn't help but think about all the parents who go through this kind of worry and stress every day of their lives-- whose kids are dealing with real, known, scary stuff, and for whom they have to be brave and strong and reassuring.  I don't know how they do it.

When they brought Joergen back after his MRI, he was snoring peacefully and the nurse said he had done very well.  She'd send the images to Dr. Mattei, who would talk us through the results.

Once Joergen started to come around, he got to have some snacks.  He hadn't eaten anything since dinner last night in preparation for his sedation, so he was pretty hungry!  Oreos + Teddy Grahams = the breakfast of champions :)

About a week or so later, I received a phone call from Dr. Mattei.  Like the ultrasound, the MRI came up empty.  Joergen's lump was likely fibrosis, which is essentially scar tissue, and is benign.  Hooray!!!  Dr. Mattei will help us keep an eye on it from this point forward to watch for any major changes in size or shape, but for now, it's nothing to worry about.

Relief is an understatement.  I thank God for taking care of our sweet Joergen and will never take his health for granted again!

Happy Easter! Happy Birthday Grandpa!

Although Spring was slow to arrive, the Easter season made us hopeful that warm weather couldn't be too far away. We started with the 2nd Annual Rubin Easter Egg Hunt, which has quickly become one of our favorite events of the year.  Sweet kids, good friends, and SO many eggs!

Joergen, Ian, and Liam get ready to hunt!

And GO!

Poor Liam, who just couldn't find any eggs :P

A visit from the Easter Bunny!!
With everything so up in the air with our church music program, and a rather small (but mighty!) choir left standing, I was at church probably more than I was home throughout Holy Week.  Since I was singing at the Easter Vigil, and again on Easter Sunday, we decided to have our own egg hunt on Holy Saturday morning.

Easter weekend was sunny and cool- but thankfully not cold.  The snow had melted and spring was truly on its way.  The boys had so much fun dashing around our yard, searching for eggs.  It was hard to believe that just a week ago they were bundled up in coats and hats!

Right after church on Easter Sunday, we headed to York to celebrate the Risen Lord... and Grandpa's 64th birthday!

Happy Easter! And happy special drink from Grandpa!

Nana and Grandpa hosted an egg hunt for the kids that afternoon.  Liam and Joergen were pros by this point!  Watching those 4 gathering eggs around the yard made me want them to stay little forever.

Remember how I said the weather on Easter weekend was so mild and beautiful?  Well, what better proof of that than a clothing-optional game of ball in the backyard!

I think we are ALL ready for spring!  It was so nice to get to be outside, enjoying the weather and each other.

And one last thing: Genevieve may only be 2, but she already knows that shoes make the outfit :)
